Creatine and the brain: what does the research say?
Most people think muscle when they hear creatine. But the brain is one of the body's most energy-hungry organs — and it uses creatine the same way muscles do: as a fast energy buffer. So what does the research actually say?
What the studies show
A widely cited 2018 systematic review pooled six randomised controlled trials (281 participants). Its conclusion was cautious but positive:
Oral creatine administration may improve short-term memory and intelligence/reasoning of healthy individuals but its effect on other cognitive domains remains unclear.
In short: creatine may improve short-term memory and reasoning in healthy people. For other areas — attention, processing speed, reaction time — the picture is currently mixed.
A larger 2024 meta-analysis (16 randomised trials, 492 participants) pushed the picture a little further: it found creatine had a measurable positive effect on memory, attention and processing speed, with the clearest gains again in older adults and in people under some form of stress.
The sleep-deprivation angle
One of the most interesting recent findings is what happens when the brain is under load. In a 2024 study in Scientific Reports, a single high dose of creatine improved working memory and processing speed in sleep-deprived participants — and shifted the brain's high-energy phosphate levels while doing it. It's a small, early study with an unusually large dose, but it fits the core idea neatly: creatine helps most exactly when the brain's energy system is stretched.
Who seems to benefit most?
- Vegetarians and vegans. They start with lower brain creatine stores and respond most clearly.
- Older adults. Several studies point to benefit in this group.
- Young, healthy adults showed no clear effect on cognitive tasks in these studies.
Be honest about the dose
One important caveat: the cognition studies often used higher doses than the 3 grams documented for physical performance. What that means in practice — and why the "right" dose for the brain isn't settled — is exactly what we dig into in Creatine for the mind.
What we take from it
Creatine is safe and inexpensive, and the brain research is one of the most exciting areas right now. We follow it closely — and describe it as it is: well documented for training, promising for the mind, but not a miracle.
